Walrus, seals, arctic char and massive bowhead
whales ply the icy waters; while caribou, polar bears, breathtaking flora and dozens of
avian species crowd the tiny island of Igloolik. Nestled on a small island off the northwest coast of Baffin Island, Igloolik is Canada's oldest arctic community. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of a unique record of continuous Inuit habitation, from the Denbigh Culture (c. 2000 BC) through the Dorsets (c. 100 AD). Even today, Igloolik remains one of the most traditionally and culturally vibrant communities in the Inuit world. While many people speak English, Inuktitut is almost always spoken. Hunting is still a major activity within the Inuit culture.

TIME OF YEAR AND WHAT ONE MIGHT FIND
| APRIL 15 - MAY 31 After a long, dark and cold winter, the arctic unveils a more gentle self as the sun rises higher above the horizon casting a warmer glow over the land and sea ice. We depart on a short dog team and/or snowmobile excursion to culturally significant sites, travel to the floedge (where sea ice meets the open ocean), where one may find bearded seals, ring seals and possibly walrus. Ice fishing for the famous arctic char with the local Inuit is a popular event at this time of year. For the extremists, we offer unforgettable excursions from Igloolik to either Arctic Bay or Pond Inlet. These expeditions provide the opportunity to observe the early arrival of birds, Baffin Island caribou, wolves, perhaps polar bears and of course breathless scenery.

JUNE 1 - JUNE 12
Thousands of birds comprised of dozens of different species, including loons, snowy owls, plovers, snow geese, eider ducks and snow buntings arrive in Igloolik to lay their eggs and raise their young.
JUNE 12 - JULY 16
|
| This is the time for big animals. While there is still a lot to see on the land, we concentrate our efforts on bowhead whales, Atlantic walrus and bearded seals. |
JULY 17 - JULY 24
| NESTING BIRDS At this time the ice starts to break up and it can be more difficult to locate bowhead whales. This is still a great time to locate walrus and other marine life including ring seals, bearded seals and harp seals. |
