Pic of JimWelcome, everyone. My name is Jim Bell, and I've lived in Nunavut for a while, working mostly for Nunatsiaq News. Over the years, hundreds of journalists, researchers, students and other curious people have jammed my email box with endless questions.

I made this page because I always wished there were a place to send them for the answers I never have the time to provide.

If you find any howling errors in this stuff, or if you know of a link you think I should add, let me know: jbell@nunanet.com

I've written these pages using the font Verdana, for maximum legibility on computer screens.

contacts

Interim Commissioner's Staff Phone Numbers
A list of names, telephone numbers and email address for people working at the Office of the Interim Commissioner.

Nunavut Deputy Ministers
A list of names, telephone numbers and email address for Nunavut's eleven deputy ministers and their staff.

nunavut.com
Phone numbers galore: Within each "nunavut.com" section, there's a "contacts" area with names, addresses, phone numbers and email info for numerous people in government, education, business and so on. The rest of the site is just an empty shell.

NWT Legislative Assembly Directory
Office telephone numbers for Nunavut MLAs.

GNWT Employee Names and Phone Numbers
Includes telephone numbers for employees of the Government of the Northwest Territories in Nunavut, as well as GNWT cabinet ministers and senior officials.

nunavut organizations

The Office of the Interim Commissioner
The Interim Commissioner's job is to represent Nunavut's interest before the Nunavut government is legally created and to do the final planning work leading up to the creation of Nunavut on April 1, 1999. Nunavut's government-in-embryo, led by its eleven newly hired deputy ministers, will work within the OIC office until April 1. There isn't much real information about Nunavut on this site, but it's a good source of telephone numbers.

The Nunavut Implementation Commission
Here you'll find copies of the NIC's two Footprints in New Snow reports — upon which most subsequent planning for Nunavut has been done. You'll find links to more or less up-to date population and economic statistics, and to some of the NIC's supplementary reports — including the one that contains its ill-fated "gender parity" proposal.

Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated
This is the organization that represents Inuit beneficiaries of the Nunavut land claim agreement. Here you'll find the entire text of that agreement formatted into HTML. I bow my head in unabashed admiration.

The Nunavut Wildlife Management Board
The Inuit-government board that's responsible for managing wildlife in Nunavut.

The Canadian Arctic Resources Committee
This is not a Nunavut organization, but a national, academic-style lobby group that really belongs in the egghead section.

Northern Perspectives
CARC's newsletter: You'll find numerous articles about Nunavut here, dating back to 1986. If you're a journalist or a researcher, this is a good place to begin your quest for background information.

The Nunavut Planning Commission
No, this is not the organization that's planning the creation of Nunavut. It's a land use planning board. If you're a journalist you can use their database to find instant Nunavut "experts." No kidding! If you're doing a science related story, it's a great resource.

The Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board
Made up of biologists, aboriginal hunters and representatives of a variety of governments, this board provides advice on managing the vast Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou herds.

Caribou News
The above-mentioned organization's excellent newsletter.

The Qikiqtanni Inuit Association
The regional organization that represents the Inuit of the Qikiqtaaluk, or Baffin region.

The Kitikmeot Inuit Association
This organization represents the Inuit of the Kitikmeot region.

The Kivalliq Inuit Association
This organization represents the Inuit of the Kivalliq, or "Keewatin" region. I can't find a web page for them anywhere, but if you know of one, send me the URL and I'll write it in. You can phone them at 1-867-645-2500.

The Nunavut Arbitration Board
Another child of the Nunavut land claim agreement, this board's job is to resolve disputes over how to carry out that agreement. As you can see from the photo on their index page, Nunavut is home to some very nice people.

The Nunavut Surface Rights Tribunal
The role of the surface rights tribunal, under the Nunavut land claims agreement, is to arbitrate disputes over access to lands, compensation payable to the surface titleholder for access, wildlife compensation claims and rights to carving stone or other specified substances in the Nunavut settlement area.

The Baffin Regional Health and Social Services Board
These pages extol the virtues of the bureaucratic body that oversees health and social services in Nunavut's largest region.

nunavut media

nunavut.com
A free online information service serving the people of Nunavut.

CBC Iqaluit on Real Audio
To hear local and regional programs, the best times to tune in are Monday to Friday from 7:00 am until 9:30 am, and 12:00 noon until 8:00 pm.

Nunatsiaq News
The newspaper I edit.

nunavut people

Rachel Qitsualik
Living proof that the best sites on the Internet are made not by corporations, but by inspired, creative individuals. You'll find honest, straightforward information about Inuit culture and language, including a bulletin board where you can post your comments and questions. No question is too stupid!

Michael Kusugak
Rankin Inlet's famous children's author.

Susan Aglukark
Nunavut's best known entertainer.

Tudjaat
This young duo combines throat singing and modern pop music.

The Leo Ussak Elementary School
You must visit this page. Go there and find out why.

nunavut culture and art

Rachel Qitsualik: Frequently Asked Questions
A FAQ page covering a list of questions that even journalists are too shy to ask.

The NWT Archives Photographic Database
This is a wonderful resource. Just enter a keyword, start your search, and within moments you'll see dozens of thumbnail photos — mostly historical — from Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. Each thumbnail represents a link to a full-size .jpg image.

Cape Dorset Artists
The flesh-and-blood human beings who made all that fashionable art.

Inuit Culture
Essays by Ann Hanson, Peter Ernerk and Joe Otokiak.

Inuit and Arctic Peoples
An eccentrically labelled, but very complete list of links to information about Inuit and other aborginal peoples of the Arctic.

nunavut eggheads

Nunavut Arctic College
A Nunavut-wide vocational training school that provides basic upgrading for adults, and a variety of job-related training programs.

The Nunavut Research Institute
Nunavut's arbiters of academic rectitude, the Science Insititute oversees the issuance of licences — yes, licences — to anyone wishing to do research in Nunavut. They also provide advice and logistical support to researchers. (These pages appear to have vanished from the face of the earth, and the links don't work any more. However, if you're a researcher and you want to know where to apply for your licence, phone Arctic College.)

The Canadian Polar Commission
Ottawa set up this body several years ago to provide advice on polar research. Since then, Ottawa has consistently ignored the polar commission's advice, and no one can figure out why it continues to exist. They have a real pretty web site though.

The Arctic Circle Page
A storehouse of academic-type essays, studies and documents.

Jack Hicks' Nunavut Bibliography
A compendium of useful stuff about Nunavut.

nunavut business

The Qikiqtaaluk Corporation
The birthright development corporation that operates on behalf of Inuit beneficiaries living in the Qikiqtaaluk — or Baffin — region.

The Baffin Region Chamber of Commerce
Most Baffin region busineses are members of this organization.

curiosities

Darrell Ohokannoak's tale of how he sent an email from Bay Chimo using an M/SAT link.

The Leo Ussak Movie Theatre
Quicktime movies on subjects like building an igloo and how how to feed and pet a siksik. If you don't know what a siksik is then you need to visit this page.

Jack Lupic's Arctic Page
You won't find a better list of links than this one. Proof yet again that the best pages on the Internet are made by inspired individuals.
